ONGWEDIVA, 29 SEP (NAMPA) – The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) has elected Hafeni Pius as its candidate for the Endola Constituency by-election.
The party’s secretary for the Ohangwena Region, Timo Shikongo told Nampa on Monday that Pius was elected during the RDP Endola District Conference held at the Onekwaya West Branch on Sunday.
Shikongo said Pius, a prominent member of the RDP at the Ehafo village, emerged victorious following a contest between him and well-known retired teacher from the Ohalushu village, Priscilla Kambode.
Another district member of the RDP, Gerson Shilongo, who had also shown interest in the Endola Constituency councillor post, withdrew from the race shortly before the election on Sunday.
Shikongo said the conference was well represented by delegates from seven out of eight RDP branches in the Endola Constituency.
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has set 07 November as the date for the Endola Constituency by-election.
The election was necessitated by the death of Ohangwena regional councillor for the Endola Constituency, Ruth Kepawa Nhinda, on 10 August this year.
Nhinda, 59, served the Endola Constituency on a Swapo-Party ticket since 2004. She was also a member of the National Council from 2004 until her death.
