SANDAKAN, July 11 (Bernama) -- Zumba enthusiasts here raised over RM7,000 for the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC), via three hours of the popular, Latin-inspired dance-based fitness workout at the Sabah Hotel here last Saturday.
More than 300 people turned up for the Zumba marathon, forking out RM50 each to meet monthly operational and Sun Bear food needs that run into an average of RM10,000.
Zumba instructor Fe De Vera organised the event as she wanted to do something worthwhile for the 28 Sun Bears that are receiving care at the BSBCC located next to the world-famous Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre.
"I have seen how hard staff at BSBCC work, and how genuine they are in caring for Sun Bears in order to protect the species. I decided to help through what I know best, and that is Zumba.
"I am so glad I could do my bit for a good, worthwhile cause. I believe everyone who showed up loves Sun Bears and that is why they supported the event. In fact, we are looking forward to holding a similar event in future," said De Vera who started teaching Zumba, about a year ago.
