WINDHOEK, 24 SEP (NAMPA) - The second edition of the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket Golf championship for amateur golfers was launched here on Wednesday morning.
The event will again be sponsored by Namibia Breweries Limited's (NBL) through its Windhoek Lager beer brand.
The tournament will kick off in the capital next month, with the finals slated for June next year.
Apart from Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe who took part in the first edition last year, countries like Swaziland, Seychelles, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have also shown interest in participating.
Ian Stevenson, manager of sponsorships and events at NBL, expressed delight at the fact that the first round (last year) had been a great success, and that it has been expanded to include more African countries.
He said the objective of the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket Golf Championship was among others to drive more players to participate in existing golf competitions in each country.
Hugh Mortimer, the executive member of the Namibia Amateur Golf Union (NAGU), said the popularity of golf had increased dramatically over the past few years, thanks to the media and in particular television coverage, but that popularity has not necessarily increased the number of people playing the sport.
In fact the numbers are reducing rather disappointingly. This is mainly due to costs, availability of facilities, and the tremendous growth in other sports, in particular cycling, he noted.
