WINDHOEK, 24 SEP (NAMPA) The Rundu Chiefs Football Club (FC) coach is confident of his team bouncing back to the Namibia Premier League (NPL) next season.
The Rundu-based team was relegated to the North-East First Division Stream last season after failing to win their NPL play-off games.
The club ended in 11th position out of 12 teams which competed in the 2013/14 NPL season.
It subsequently qualified for premier league play-offs with the runners-up of three First Division streams - Mighty Gunners from Otjiwarongo (North-West First Division); Windhoek-based Rebels (Southern Stream) and Benfica from Tsumeb (North-East Stream).
After three games each, Mighty Gunners, Rebels, and Benfica booked their spots in the 2014/15 Namibia Premier League due to start on 11 October 2014.
Rundu Chiefs coach John Sikerete told Nampa on Wednesday that he has a strong team and is confident of a return to the elite league next season.
I know where we went wrong last season in the Premier League, and right now the team has gained enough experience that we lacked while playing Premier League football, and we can now beat any team.
I kept my entire team, so when the First Division League starts we will hit the ground running, he said.
Sikerete added that he does not see any competition from other teams in the North-East First Division Stream, because his team is hungrier and more determined to play Premier League football once again.
In our league we have teams like Cuca Tops (from Rundu) and Chief Santos from Tsumeb who can challenge us for the title or might come in our way for promotion, but looking at Cuca Tops right now - they have more problems to worry about then getting promoted.
They have two teams in the First Division - their development team and the senior team - so it will be difficult for them to divide players among the two teams. As for Santos, we dont see them as much of a threat if we win all our other games in the league, he stated.
The coach said the team is currently busy reinforcing its striking department, and they have promoted young players from their development team, Young Chiefs, who will help the team get back to top flight football.
The First Division Stream is set to start on 01 November 2014.
