WINDHOEK, 18 SEP (NAMPA) – Namibia Football Association (NFA) president John Muinjo on Thursday presented the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Championship Trophy to the tournament’s main sponsor Telecom Namibia.
The company is sponsoring the women's football championship through its brand TN Mobile.
The event is set to take place in Namibia from 11 to 25 October this year.
Namibia qualified to the continental showpiece by virtue of hosting the event.
“CAF is confident in Namibia hosting the tournament because they gave us the trophy before the tournament even kicked off,” said Muinjo during the handing-over ceremony.
He called on all Namibians to use the opportunity to make an extra income.
“There will be many people travelling to Namibia to watch the tournament, and it will really be nice if people can rent out their back rooms or houses to these visiting supporters who will be in the country for two weeks enjoying football,” said Muinjo.
He also urged all Namibians to be good hosts, because hosting events of this magnitude can lead to the country hosting even bigger tournaments in the future.
Telecom Namibia Chief Mobile Officer, Armando Perny said during the same occasion that hosting the event will put Namibia on the global map.
“As Namibians we should put our differences aside and come support our team, the Brave Gladiators, and the tournament itself, because this tournament is not a gimmick but a reality,” he said.
Telecom Namibia will install free Internet services at the Sam Nujoma and Independence stadiums during the matches.
Meanwhile, the Algerian women’s national team will arrive here on 26 September.
Also arriving on the same day will be a group of 30 women referees and a delegation of 60 CAF officials.
