WINDHOEK, 18 SEP (NAMPA) - The Namibian Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) have no influence or control over the Namibia Taxi and Transport Union (NTTU), the party says.
“Let it be known that the NTTU as an independent trade union has the prerogative to drive the directives and policy of the union to the best interest and wellbeing of their members, without fear or favour and undue pressure,” said NEFF Commissar of Communications Olsen Kahiriri during a media conference here on Sunday.
His comments follow speculation about the link between the party and the union, specifically with regards to NEFF Commissar of Transport and Social Development Werner Januarie, who is the NTTU’s president.
Kahiriri said the leadership of the NTTU has the right to associate themselves individually with any political formation of their choice as per privilege accorded to them under the constitution of the Republic of Namibia.
Meanwhile, the NTTU will stage a national taxi strike by its members on 20 October this year.
The union is unhappy about the high traffic fines imposed on taxi drivers, and wants the status of taxi operators to be changed to employees.
