Speech by President Pohamba at Cde Simon Hafeni“Mzee” Kaukungwa's funeral

We have come to this National Shrine, the Heroes Acre to lay to rest Comrade Simon Hafeni “Mzee” Kaukungwa.  Here, Comrade Kaukungwa takes up a revered place amongst the heroes and heroines of Namibia from different periods of our history.

Those who rest here have performed outstanding deeds in the service of our country and its people.  Namibia will remain forever grateful for their leadership and their bravery.  We honour them for fearlessly resisting colonial occupation and apartheid oppression.

We revere them for not giving up in pursuing the just cause of freedom and nationhood.  The current and future generations will be inspired by their patriotism and their desire to make Namibia a better place.

While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary legacy that Comrade Kaukungwa leaves behind.  I am confident that this will be a source of strength for the widow, the children and the entire bereaved family.

Although he is no longer with us, Comrade Kaukungwa will leave on in our memories and in the hearts of thousands of people, who he worked with and those that knew him.  Let us, therefore, bid him farewell as he joins the ranks of silent extraordinary patriots, the heroes and heroines of Namibia who are buried here at the Heroes Acre.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Long Live the Heroes and Heroines of Namibia!

Long Live the Republic of Namibia!

I thank you.
