Ministry of Health to buy mobile dental vans for remote areas

EENHANA, 16 SEP (NAMPA) The Minister of Health and Social Services. Dr Richard Kamwi says his ministry is in the process of procuring mobile dental vans.
Kamwi said this in a statement read on his behalf by the acting Director of Health and Social Services in the Ohangwena Region, John Hango, during the commemoration of National Oral Health Day at Eenhana last Friday.
The Health and Social Services Minister said the mobile dental vans will be fully equipped with high-tech equipment to deliver quality dental services to community members in the remote areas.
Kamwi indicated that the procurement of the said vans form part of his ministrys work towards improving the quality and quantity oral health service delivery.
Another positive indicator of the improved and quality oral health services delivery in Namibia, according to Kamwi, is that almost all oral health worker positions in the ministry have been filled.
Five Namibian dentists who recently graduated are currently completing their internship at Katutura and Oshakati hospitals.
These dentists will be dispatched to various regions.
We are also training more Namibian dentists and dental therapists abroad, and arrangements have been made to initiate the local training of dentists at the University of Namibia, Kamwi explained.
He went on to say a lot more however needs to be done, considering that 80 per cent of dentists in Namibia serve a minority population in the private sector.
The remaining 20 per cent bear the burden of serving the majority of our people, Kamwi noted.
The 2014 National Oral Health Day was marked under the theme Celebrating a Healthy Smile.
