WINDHOEK, 12 SEP (NAMPA) – Namibia’s senior netball team on Friday departed for Gaborone, Botswana to compete in the 2015 Netball World Cup qualifiers.
Namibia has been selected to play World Cup qualifying games along with Botswana, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya in Botswana from 14 to 20 September 2014.
Only the top two teams will qualify for the World Cup slated for Australia from 07 to 16 August 2015.
The team that ends in third place will also be in Australia to take part in the developmental games during the same time period.
The national netball team has been training hard over the past month in preparation for the African group qualifiers.
Speaking during the sending-off ceremony in the capital, Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) president Agnes Tjongarero told the players to compete as team players and not individuals.
“I have never watched you play and cannot say how good you are, but all I will tell you is please, when you are in Botswana, compete as if this was your last chance.
There are 1 000 more players in the country who could have taken the position you currently have, but you were the selected lucky ones and you should represent the country with pride and play as a team,” she said.
Tjongarero went on to say the level of competition is very high at these types of tournaments.
“We are lucky that we don’t have to compete against the best teams in Africa (South Africa and Malawi) at this championship. But that does not mean we are going to find weak opponents either. African teams are physically strong and we need to be strong too,” she said.
Netball Namibia public relations officer Rebekka /Goagoses-Nekundi told Nampa on Thursday the players are in high spirits and ready to go to Botswana. She said the trip was almost cancelled because of a lack of funds but with the help of CIC Trade Promoters, Virgin Active, Smart Embroidery, USN Namibia, Zinplex Namibia, Pharm Dynamics, Amushe Printing, the Namibia Diamond Trading Company, the De Beers Group, All Namibia Group Embroidery, and Wanderers Catering, the team will departure for the games on Friday.
The squad consists of Tusnelde Fillemon, Susan van Zyl, Joeline Dunn, Eve Hamaalwa, Juane Jansen van Vuuren, Schoerita van der Merwe, Vetarapi Ngapite, Glyneth Kazonganga, Menette Muvangua, Jatjinda Kambatuku, Twaneth Harases, Augusta Sethie, Melissa Neis, Delila Keja, Lyan Pura, and Maretha Burger.
