MELAKA, July 10 (Bernama) -- A total of 6,144 poor people in Melaka are eligible to receive aid from the tithe payment for this year, said Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron.
Idris, who is also the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM) chairman, said the number was down by more than 50 percent compared to last year's 9,496 recipients.
However, he said the total expenses for this year increased to RM2.4 million from RM2.37 million last year.
"The amount of tithe distribution received by each asnaf or group and needy recipients in the state can be increased following the drop in the number of recipients," he said in a speech read by the deputy chairman of the Housing, Local Government and the Environment Committee, Sazali Muhd Din in a Ramadan programme by MAIM, here, today.
"We feel there are several factors that contributed to the decline in the number of recipients this year including the fact that some of the recipients may have moved out and lived with their children, making it difficult for MAIM to contact them," he said.
