WINDHOEK, 07 SEP (NAMPA) The ruling Swapo-party has officially declared its vice-president, Hage Geingob as the partys sole candidate for this years Presidential Election in November this year.
Swapo-party president Hifikepunye Pohamba made the official announcement at the partys first star rally held at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.
During the rally the party also launched its 2014 Election Manifesto, and at the same time commenced the partys campaign for the 2014 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The 2014 Election Manifesto was launched under the theme Consolidating Peace, Stability and Prosperity.
At the 2012 Swapo-party Congress, we elected our vice-president who would also be our sole candidate for this years Presidential Election. It is, therefore, public knowledge that the Swapo-party candidate for the Presidential Election is Hage Geingob, said Pohamba, who is also the Namibian president.
Addressing a large gathering of Swapo members, supporters and sympathizers, Pohamba said Geingob is a tested leader, having been part of the partys Central Committee (CC) since 1970, and thereafter becoming a member of the Politburo in 1980.
For 20 years before our independence, Swapo prepared him for leadership. He is a man I have known since 1962m and I am sure he will build on the foundation that has been laid over the past 24 years to strengthen democracy, he said.
Just a week ago the party concluded its Electoral College, during which the partys members were elected for seats in the next National Assembly.
Pohamba said this was done as part of Swapos preparation for the national elections later this year, and thus called on all 96 candidates who made it onto the list to consider themselves as representing the entire nation, rather than specific regions or districts.
They must campaign for the Swapo-party and its presidential candidate to win in all regions and districts of the country, he stressed.
Pohamba further called on party members to work hard, plan properly and mobilise the Namibian people in all parts of the country to ensure that Swapo wins the upcoming elections with a landslide victory.
He also urged the entire nation to vote for Geingob and the Swapo-party in the elections.
