VELD FIRE OUTBREAK: NORTH – EASTERN MOUNTAIN OF WINDHOEK

 

WINDHOEK04 September 2014:  The City of Windhoek hereby informs the public about the outbreak of veld fire in the North to Eastern mountains of Windhoek, specifically East of Elisenheim and including Ongobo East and West. The fire has been reported to have started on Monday, 01 September 2014 and was further reported to our Emergency Service on the 02 September 2014.

The affected area is mostly mountains and farmland. Due to its structural surface and limited farm roads; there is a limited access to the affected area. The firefighting team is well equipped with vehicles on the ground, while the helicopter is monitoring the progress from above, and directs the firefighting team on the ground to critical areas and hot spots. Thus far, the affected area is approximately 35 – 40 square km (11 698 ha). No casualty or damage to infrastructures has been reported, except the destruction of vegetation on the mountains.

The public should take note that, there is no need to panic as there is progress in containing and extinguishing the fire. Our Emergency Services, with the assistance of the Namibian Defence Force are hard at work to extinguish the fire by all means.
