Last chance to register
NAMIBIANS will have a last opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to register for the upcoming elections when the supplementary registration of voters, costing the Electoral Commission of Namibia about N$58 million, kicks off on Monday (8 September).
The supplementary registration process will end on 20 September and registration points will be open from 08h00 to 19h00 during that period.
According to the ECN there are 3 823 registration points and 3 525 officials have been appointed to man these points. In addition, 14 regional coordinators, 28 assistants for them, 121 constituency supervisors and 150 Information Technology field staff support members have been appointed.
“This will give an opportunity to all citizens that were not able to register during the General Registration of Voters, (during the period of 15 January to 2 March 2014) as well as eligible voters that turned 18 years. The supplementary registration will also record changes in residency and correct any errors on the electorates’ current registration cards,” the director of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Prof Paul John Isaak said. He added that this would also enable the ECN to establish temporary registration points outside Namibia to allow Namibian citizens outside the country to be registered as voters.
During the last registration process a total of 4 484 corrections to name, gender and ID numbers were affected, with a further 470 were transfers between constituencies.
During the period of 3 March till 6 June, the ECN has also been using various techniques such as fingerprint matching, etc; to remove 1 743 duplicates and 178 deceased persons and detect possible 382 fraudulent activities marked for further investigation.
The ECN also detected 938 additions that had to be made to the register – this includes all voters that have registered as electors, but were not showing in the numbers published by the ECN on 14 March 2014.
With regard to the registration for the Local Authority election a total of 42 449 electors were registered but did not provide the required documentation at the time of registration and 692 names were removed due to duplications and deaths.
The total number of voters registered so far is 1 161 383 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections and 363 997 for the Local Authority elections.
