MILD QUAKE HITS NORTHERN PERU

PIURA, July 10 (BERNAMA-NNN-ANDINA) -- An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted the coastal region of Piura in northern Peru on Tuesday.

Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) said the quake occurred at 00:54 hours local time (05:54 GMT).

The IGP said the earthquake’s epicentre was recorded 36 km north of Piura's Sullana province at a depth of 37 km.

According to Civil Defence authorities, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The coast of Peru is part of the Ring of Fire, a volcanic area that surrounds the Pacific Ocean.
