WINDHOEK, 25 AUG (NAMPA) - Namibia Football Association (NFA) Executive Committee member, Jackey Gertze says id the NFA presents a lot of opportunities for youth development through the various annual youth tournaments.
Speaking at the official opening of the annual Skorpion Zinc Mine Under-17 soccer tournament here on Friday, Gertze said young Namibian players must take maximum advantage of these football tournaments in order to realise their dreams of becoming professional footballers.
In a media statement availed to the media on Monday, Gertze added that players who are participating in these tournaments must use such occasions to showcase their talents so that they can attract the attention of national team selectors and coaches of the various soccer academies in the country.
“Players who have been selected to represent their regions at events like the Skorpion Zinc U-17 junior tournament have the ability to be selected in the senior national teams. If players emerge through these youth programmes showing true potential, discipline and great ability to play at the highest level, they will be monitored by the various national team coaches and they will subsequently be polished in order to feature in the senior national teams,” Gertze said.
She commended the government and the various partners of the NFA for contributing towards youth development in the country, saying the assistance of the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture (MYNSSC) in particular has made it possible for the NFA to realise the dreams of many young Namibians.
This is the second edition of the annuals Skorpion Zinc Mine U-17 football tournament. The inaugural tournament was held at Keetmanshoop in the //Karas Region last year.
The tournament, which has seen the participation of 13 regional U-17 football teams, is hosted by the Skorpion Zinc Mine in collaboration with the NFA.
