KUALA BESUT, July 9 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he was saddened by the news that a teacher was shot dead in Bachok yesterday.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said police had been instructed to leave no stone unturned in investigating the murder of Hashim Mat Zain, 43, a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan Beris Panchor in Bachok.

"I extend my condolences to his family. I am deeply saddened by this news, police will carry out a comprehensive investigation including looking at factors like the ease of obtaining guns," he told reporters after launching the BN election machinery for the Kuala Besut by-election and announcing the name of its candidate at Dataran Kuala Besut here.

Hashim, who was also a music teacher at the school, was gunned down by a lone gunman at the Jalan Beris Panchor Tawang-Kota Baharu T-junction nearby the school at 1.40pm.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman told reporters in Kota Baharu today that police were not dismissing that it was a hit job with revenge believed to be the motive.

He said police believed this could be the case because it was understood the victim was also involved in business. -- BERNAMA
