WINDHOEK, 21 AUG (NAMPA) - A booklet containing the life story of struggle icon Andimba Toivo ya Toivo was launched in the capital on Thursday.
It was compiled as part of the celebrations of Ya Toivo's 90th birthday on Friday.
The booklet was written by Defence Minister Nahas Angula, and captures the hero's life from the 1950s up to Namibia's independence in 1990.
Speaking at the launch, Angula, who is also the chairperson of the advisory sub-committee for Ya Toivo's 90th birthday preparatory committee, described him as a visionary man whose qualities should be celebrated.
“We are here to celebrate vision and longevity, and Ya Toivo is a man of vision. We must celebrate his courage, perseverance and steadfastness. These are the qualities of Ya Toivo,” he stressed.
Angula, who dedicated the booklet to the youth of Namibia whom he said are the future of the country and have to take over from the leaders to build the nation, advised them that Namibia still faces socio-economic struggles such as poverty, inequality and unemployment.
These challenges, he noted, require somebody to fight them, like the country's heroes and heroines fought for the independence of this country.
“We cannot build our future on this social deficit. If we want to build a strong foundation, we must make sure that every Namibian has a place under the sun in this country.
It is now up to the young people to build this foundation,” he noted.
The booklet was launched by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Theo-Ben Gurirab.
Meanwhile, various activities to celebrate the 90th birthday of Ya Toivo commenced countrywide early this month, with lectures kicking off in Katima Mulilo on 01 and 02 August.
Other lectures on Ya Toivo’s life were held in the Ongwediva, Khomas and Karas Regions, respectively.
More lectures are to be held in the Khomas, Erongo, Ohangwena and Omusati regions during September.
