WINDHOEK, 19 AUG (NAMPA) – Namibian civil society organisations will discuss the sensitisation of African civil society here on Wednesday.
The meeting is organised by the African Union (AU) Mission on Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC).
A media statement issued here on Tuesday by the AU Commission’s Communication Officer Afrah Thabit said the meeting is aimed at ensuring that the presence and impact of Namibia’s CSOs would be felt in the second Permanent General Assembly of ECOSOCC.
She said the meeting is essential to enable the progressive development of state-civil society relations within the development project of the AU is people-oriented and people-driven.
Thabit added that the involvement of Namibian CSO groups is very critical as Namibia was not represented in the first ECOSOCC General Assembly from 2008 to 2012.
This was the focus of directive of the AU Executive Council meeting in June 2014 in Malabo, which mandated the Commission to conduct the campaign and to ensure that a new ECOSOCC Assembly is established before the end of the year 2014.
On its two previous stops in Zambia and Zimbabwe, the campaign attracted attention and support of a wide variety of civil society networks and organisations.
