KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today called on all Muslims to strengthen brotherhood and unity of the ummah so that Islam will always be respected by all.

Muhyiddin said the symbol of unity of the ummah would be prominently visible when all Muslims across the world, regardless of their country, race, mother-tongue and culture, celebrated the beginning of Ramadan by fasting and increasing good deeds in order to get closer to Allah.

"Let's spend the month by increasing our good deeds and getting closer to Allah and asking for His forgiveness.

"Hopefully, by fasting throughout the month of Ramadan will help us be more patient in life's facing trials and tribulations," he said in his message in conjunction with the beginning of Ramadan here today.

He said it was also hoped that the 'zakat fitrah' or the obligatory alms, as well as donations, given during Ramadan would also strengthen the love among Muslims and all other human race.

Muhyiddin said Malaysian people, especially the Muslims, should be grateful for having the opportunity to perform their religious duties, as well as fasting during Ramadan in a peaceful environment.

"In conjunction with this blessed month of Ramadan, we also pray that our Muslim brothers in Palestine, Egypt, Syria and other conflict-stricken countries will be strong in facing the challenges.

"Hopefully, the conflicts will be resolved soon and may Allah bless the Muslims there with eternal peace and prosperity.

"I would also like to wish all Muslims Happy Ramadan al-Mubarak and may Allah accept our deeds and bless us all with His love, kindness and grace always," he added.
