KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Bernama) -- A member of parliament has urged the Tourism Ministry to swiftly intervene to save Pasar Payang in Kuala Terengganu from a proposed demolition.

Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad (PAS-Kuala Terengganu) said he had briefed Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz on the issue and hoped the latter would bring it up with Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said.

"I spoke to him yesterday and he was very supportive. I hope he can help in the manner that he did in the Jonker Street issue," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

It was reported that a project to build a 23-storey five-star hotel and a 30-storey serviced apartment had been proposed for the Pasar Payang site.

Regarded as a living heritage among locals and tourists, Pasar Payang is famed for its lively trading activity in fresh produce and traditional handicrafts.
