WINDHOEK, 31 JUL (NAMPA) Rally for Democracy and Progress Youth League (RDPYL) Secretary-General (SG) Monica Nambelela on Thursday called on Government to make its voice heard on the downgrading of the Hosea Kutako International Airport.
Namibias only international airport has been downgraded from a Category Nine to a Category Five airport.
As a result of the downgrade, Air Namibia can no longer operate its A330-200 fleet in or out of the Hosea Kutako International Airport until such time as the Namibia Airports Company (NAC) has rectified the shortcomings to the satisfaction of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
ICAO downgraded the airport following an audit on the NAC's facilities at the airport recently.
Speaking at the partys offices in Windhoek, Nambelela called on Government to resolve the matter as soon as possible.
Get rid of those employed on the basis of jobs for comrades and get component Namibians, regardless of political orientation, who can give this nation success stories to celebrate, she said.
Nambelela indicated that the downgrading of the airport will affect tourist arrivals in a country renowned for its beauty and tourism opportunities.
She added that Namibia is well positioned to be ranked as a vibrant tourism hub, but those who are in decision making positions do not take advantage of this.
The Land of the Brave will become a haven for foreign operators because the Airbuses are now flying via other countries and we as Namibia are losing out big time, she said.
Nambelela said tourism is a big contributor to the countrys economy, and it is not understandable that anyone would let millions of dollars slip through their hands.
