WINDHOEK, 31 JUL (NAMPA) – The two First National Bank (FNB)-sponsored premier rugby teams - Western Suburbs and Wanderers - will battle it out in an exhibition match at the Wanderers field on Saturday.
Western Suburbs play in Group A and Wanderers in Group B of the Namibia Rugby Premier League. Both are leading their respective groups.
This derby has been an annual event on the rugby calendar for the past six years.
Other matches scheduled for the day include under-10s and the second teams of Western Suburbs and Wanderers.
Meanwhile, league matches on Saturday will see Unam taking on Reho Falcons at the Unam sports stadium on Saturday.
In a statement availed to Nampa on Wednesday by FNB, Ingrid Goeieman, Manager Sponsorships and Donations at FNB Namibia invited the public to join them and support the teams this coming Saturday.
“We promise a great fun-filled day. From 12h00 the under-10s will play followed by the second teams, and then at 15h15 the first league teams of FNB Western Suburbs and FNB Wanderers,” she said.
In the same statement, James Camp from FNB Western Suburbs said the derby has been a regular item on the sport calendar for the past six years and FNB Namibia has supported it for the same length of time. According to Camp, the sponsorship by FNB Namibia has been invaluable as it has afforded them the opportunity to move into semi-professional status with the club while also receiving financial and in-kind support.
“We also believe that FNB’s belief in us has given us the edge to be champions three times in the last years,” he said.
Flip Louw from FNB Wanderers added that this was a rugby match between old rivals and it was all about gathering supporters from the two clubs to unite and support their teams.
