OHANGWENA, 28 JUL (NAMPA) – President Hifikepunye Pohamba has called upon all eligible voters in the Ohangwena Constituency to turn out in big numbers during the by-election due to take place at that constituency on 05 August this year.
The president made the call on Saturday during a Swapo-Party rally held at Helao Nafidi’s Ohangwena suburb as part of the ruling party’s mobilisation campaign.
About 12 000 eligible voters are expected to go to the polls.
The Ohangwena Constituency by-election follows the death of the constituency councillor Maria Kombwana on 05 May this year.
Kombwana served the constituency on a Swapo-Party political affiliation ticket.
Swapo has fielded retired principal Johannes Hakanyome as its candidate, while the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), the only other participating political organisation, appointed business personality Vilho Shimwooshili as its candidate.
“As a common practice, the Swapo Party has, through its internal democratic processes, identified Comrade Johannes Kornelius Hakanyome as the suitable candidate to contest the upcoming by-election,” Pohamba told his audience.
He urged people of the Ohangwena Constituency to vote for Hakanyome for continuity and accelerated service delivery.
Pohamba believes Hakanyome will build “on the strong foundation that the Swapo Party and the late Kombwana have already established in the areas of governance and service delivery in the development of infrastructure and the broadening of socio-economic benefits to the people”.
Pohamba, who is also Swapo president, also presented Hakanyome to those who attended the rally.
The Ohangwena Constituency is one of 12 constituencies in the Ohangwena Region.
