PUTRAJAYA, July 8(Bernama)-- The Barisan Nasional (BN) should be returned unopposed to the Kuala Besut seat in honour of late state assemblyman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar.

Member of Parlimen for Besut, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the opposition should not contest the by-election and show respect for Ramadan by putting aside political ideology.

"In honour of the BN win in Kuala Besut two months ago and to respect Ramadan, the opposition should not contest the seat," he said at the pre-launch of the 5th Education Institution Sports Championship (SIPMA), here, today.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will announce the BN candidate in Kuala Besut tomorrow.

The Election Commission (EC) had set nomination for Kuala Besut by-election on July 12 with polling day on July 24.

The Kuala Besut seat fell vacant following the death of state assemblyman Dr A Rahman Mokhtar on June 26.

In the May 5 general election, Dr A Rahman retained the Kuala Besut state seat after beating PAS candidate, Napisah Ismail by a 2,434 vote majority. -BERNAMA
