PUTRAJAYA, July 8 (Bernama) -- Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) sponsored students who are studying in Egypt are safe and there is no need to bring them home yet.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said the ministry is in frequent contact with Wisma Putra for advice and guidelines on the country's situation.

He said the situation in areas where Mara-sponsored students were staying in Egypt was under control the areas were not involved in any protests.

"As long as they are not involved in any demonstration then their safety is assured," he told reporters after presenting staff of the Community Development Department (Kemas) with Excellent Service Awards at the ministry's multi-purpose hall, here today.

The political situation in Egypt is now tense after President Mohammed Morsi was ousted by the military on Tuesday, resulting in clashes between Morsi supporters and their opponents in several cities in the country, claiming more than 30 lives.

Last Saturday, Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh advised Malaysian students who had completed their examinations and were not involved in other academic programmes to return home for holiday following the unrest in Egypt.
