WINDHOEK, 21 JUL (NAMPA) – The final draw for the Skorpion Zinc Under-17 Cup will be held next Thursday, the Namibia Football Association (NFA)’s head of competitions, Titus Kunamuene has announced.
The Cup is set to take place at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek from 22 to 25 August this year, and will see 14 regional U-17 football teams vie for recognition and top honours.
A media statement issued by the NFA on Monday indicated that the draw for the second edition of the Cup will take place on 24 July.
Kunamuene said the tournament is for players born on or after 01 January 1998. Each region is expected to submit to the organising committee a provisional list of 30 players by 04 August 2014 and the final 20 list by 14 August.
“We still have 13 football regions for now and not two teams from Kavango as we still have to address the issue of that region being divided into two,” he explained.
A sponsorship deal worth N.dollars 1.3 million for the Cup was announced by Skorpion Zinc and the NFA last March, and will cover a period of three years.
Khomas were crowned champions after beating Erongo 2-1 in the final at Keetmanshoop, with Dino Roman Engelbrecht and Jandjamuje Maharero scoring for Khomas, and Amaru van Neel finding the net for Erongo.
The Oshikoto Region finished third by overcoming Oshana 2-1.
The Otjozondjupa Region won the Fair Play Award, while the ‘Moment of Brilliance’ award went to Pandeni Kandjabanga of the Oshana Region.
Oshikoto striker Josef Utoni scored 11 goals in six games to win the Golden Shoe award, while Khomas’s Jandjamuje Maharero was voted the Player of the Tournament.
Khomas goalkeeper Benni Ochurub was voted Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
