WINDHOEK, 20 JUL (NAMPA) A two-day old baby boy died while incarcerated with his mother in the Gobabis Prison last Thursday.
The Namibian Police Force Sergeant Slogan Matheus told the media here on Sunday that a preliminary investigation by the police concluded that the baby died because it was born prematurely.
He said the mother, a Zimbabwean national, allegedly found the baby dead when she woke up at about 04h00 that morning.
The deceased baby was taken to the Gobabis State Hospital, and investigations into the matter continue.
In a separate incident, a one-year-old baby boy drowned in a bucket of water in Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa Region on Saturday.
It is the second toddler who died in a similar manner at the town in a space of two days, following the death of an 18-month-old girl on Thursday.
Matheus said the biological mother of the boy left him with a neighbour to fetch fire wood in the veld.
This neighbour, however, left the baby boy in the care of small children, and upon her return at about 10h49 found that the baby had drowned in a bucket of water.
The deceased has been identified as Nghilifavali Hamelenga, and his next of kin have been informed.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
