ALGIERS, July 8 (BERNAMA-NNN-APS) -- Algeria and the European Union (EU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a strategic partnership in the energy sector.

The MoU, signed here Sunday by Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal and European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso who is on two-day visit to the country, seeks to boost the excellent energy co-operation between the two sides and open promising development prospects, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official told APS.

It covers all aspects of co-operation in energy -- both conventional and renewable energies -- including energy industry, technology transfer, expertise and management.

Barroso said the EU also wanted to establish closer ties with Algeria in the economic and political fields.

"We are very interested in having even closer ties (with Algeria). My visit aims at strengthening ties in the field of political dialogue and economic co-operation," he said upon his arrival Saturday at Algier's Houari Boumediene International Airport.

Barroso said his visit to Algeria will also allow him to raise with Algerian officials issues of regional and international interest.
