UNIVERSIADE : HOCKEY SQUAD TROUNCE POLAND 7-1

KAZAN, (Russia) July 7 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian hockey squad went on a goal-scoring spree when they trounced Poland 7-1 in the first match of Group A at the 27th World University Sports (Universiade) held at the Field Hockey Centre, Kazan.

Dangerous Lee emerged as the top scorer for the team with two goals in the fourth and 24th minutes.

Havinder Singh provided the third goal in the 35th minute before the whistle for the interval was sounded.

The Malaysian team continued to dominate the game with the fourth goal coming in the 50th minute courtesy of Kazamirul Nasruddin.

Two minutes later, Muhamad Hafiz Zainol added to Poland's misery with a fifth goal while teammate Muhammad Azammi Adabi contributed the sixth goal in the 56th minute.

Malaysia's seventh goal was scored by skipper Muhammad Faeez Ibrahim in the 65th minute before Poland produced a consolation goal in the 70th minute through Patryk Bulka.

Malaysian coach, Nor Azlan Bakar said he was pleased with the performance of his wards and wanted them to maintain the momentum for the next match.

"A fine start for the national squad and we managed to score many goals. We will ensure that this winning momentum is maintained.

"The strategy that we planned succeeded and the match today produced the desired result," he said.

Malaysia will face the home team, Russia on Wednesday in the second group match. Also listed in group A are Italy and South Africa.
