ONGWEDIVA, 05 JUL (NAMPA) - Only two political parties will participate in the Ohangwena Constituency by-election in the Ohangwena Region, the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) Returning Officer, Lysias Haiduwa has said.
“It is only the Swapo Party and the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) which managed to register their candidates. The DTA of Namibia, which has also shown interest until this morning, has failed to show up before the closing hour,” Haiduwa told this news agency on Saturday shortly after 11h00, which was the deadline.
The Ohangwena Constituency by-election will take place at 20 fixed sites and six mobile points throughout the constituency on 05 August.
He pointed out that Swapo and the RDP were the only two political organisations present at the Ohangwena Constituency office at the Onhuno settlement, where the ECN publically announced the names of the participating candidates and the parties they represent.
Swapo’s candidate is retired principal of the Ohangwena Primary School, Johannes Kornelius Hakanyome, while the RDP will be represented by business personality, Vilho Shimwooshili.
The by-election follows the death of former councillor, Maria Tuleingepo Kombwana in May this year.
Haiduwa appealed to the participating parties to adhere to the country’s election code of conduct during their voters’ mobilisation campaigns, and at the same time to assist the ECN in its ongoing voters’ education campaign, especially on the use the electronic voting machine (EVM).
Namibia will use EVMs for the first time during the Ohangwena Constituency by-election.
