SERDANG, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan rugby team demonstrated their superior skill when they defended the gold medal in the final category of the Cup at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2013 today.

In the final match at the Padang Kolej Canselori, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) here, the Kelantan squad under coach Mohd Saizul Hafifi Md Noor trounced Melaka 36-0.

Mohd Saizul Hafifi, when approached by reporters after the match, said he was proud of the success of his wards in defending the gold medal which they had won in the 2011 edition in Kuala Lumpur.

"The intensive training that we underwent two months before the games had clearly been fruitful," he said.

Mohd Saizul Hafifi said the loss of three key players who were representing the country at the World University Meet (Universiade) being held in Kazan, Russia, did not deter the Kelantan squad.

Earlier, Kedah won the bronze after defeating Terengganu, 35-5 in the match at the same venue.

For the record, Kelantan won the gold in the 2011 edition after beating Sabah in the Cup final.
