WALVIS BAY, 30 JUN (NAMPA) – The Namibian Police at Walvis Bay on Saturday charged a 20-year-old man with culpable homicide for allegedly causing an accident in which two people from Otjiwarongo died.
Deceased Estelle Louw, 35, died in the accident along with a 38-year-old male passenger at the corner of Union Street and Fifth Road Saturday night.
The police have indicated that Jean Cilliers, who was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser, allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and smashed into the Hyundai sedan driven by Louw.
Cilliers faces charges of culpable homicide, drunken driving and reckless or negligent driving.
The name of the second deceased could not be revealed as his next of kin had not yet been informed.
There were two other passengers in the Hyundai, who escaped the accident with injuries.
It is understood that the travellers from Otjiwarongo were attending a wedding in Walvis Bay.
NamPol’s Crime Investigations Coordinator in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Otillie Kashuupulwa confirmed the accident to Nampa on Monday, saying one female victim was transported to Windhoek for medical attention.
“Another victim, a male, was already released from hospital as his injuries were not serious,” Kashuupulwa said.
Information from the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court indicates that Cilliers appeared before court on Monday morning and was released on bail of N.dollars 9 000.
His case is postponed to 04 September 2014 for further police investigations into the matter.
