27TH UNIVERSIADE OPENING ENTHRALS SPECTATORS

KAZAN, (Russia) July 7 (Bernama) -- The three dimensional (3D) opening ceremony of the 27th World University Games (Universiade 2013) at the Kazan Arena here enthralled over 40,000 spectators.

The spectacular performance themed 'U are the World', which was officiated by Russia president Vladimir Putin, started at 9.30pm Saturday (1.30am Malaysian time Sunday).

The spectators were mesmerised by local musical dances with the display of 3D images beamed on the screen by 96 projectors.

Boasting over 180 ethnic groups, Russia presented musical folklore dances, much to the delight of athletes and officials from participating countries.

About 12,000 athletes from 166 countries are competing at the Universiade which started yesterday and ends on July 17. Some 20,000 volunteers are assisting the athletes and officials.

The Malaysian contingent is made up of 114 athletes and 65 officials headed by chef de mission Datuk Dr Kassim Md Nor.

Malaysian athletes, who were clad in yellow and black stripes traditional dress, were led by flag bearer Mohammad Noor Faeez Ibrahim (hockey player) during the opening ceremony parade.
