KAZAN, (Russia), July 6 (Bernama) -- National shot putter Adi Alifuddin Hussin wants to spring a surprise in his first appearance at the 27th World University Games (Universiade 2013) here.

He resolves to overcome the Group A qualifying round to enable him to qualify for the final at the Central Stadium and Track and Field Hall Sunday.

"The competition here is very tough, especially from American athletes, but I will do my best to qualify for the final.

"A gold medal target is very hard to achieve, but I will not give up just like that," he told reporters here today.

Adi won a gold medal at the Palembang SEA Games 2011 and is the national record holder with a throw of 17.53 meters.

"My main goal is to break my personal best record and retain the SEA Games gold. My participation in Universiade is a warm up for the SEA Games in December in Myanmar," he said.

Universiade men's shot put qualifying round will be held at 10am local time Sunday (2pm Malaysian time) while the final will take place at 7.45pm local time (11.45pm Malaysian time).
