KLANG, July 6 (Bernama) -- A total of 5,000 people have joined the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department's (JBPM) Rakan Pili Bomba programme aimed at strengthening ties between the community and the rescue team, especially to curb vandalism.
Department director Othman Abdullah said the programme was aimed at encouraging the public to take care of fire hydrants and ensure it was in good condition.
He said the department had allocated RM500,000 for the conservation and preservation of fire hydrants, such as painting and repair works, statewide.
"There are 70,000 fire hydrants in Selangor and we continue to cooperate with all quarters to create awareness on maintaining fire hydrants.
"We urge the public to alert us, in the event of leaking or damaged fire hydrants, or those misused by irresponsible quarters," he told reporters after officiating the Shell Safety Day Carnival at Jalan Haji Sirat here today.
