KEMAMAN, July 6 (Bernama) -- A hostel able to accommodate 200 orang asli students will be built in Kampung Pergam here to enable them to study religion after school hours.

Air Puteh assemblyman Wan Abdul Hakim Wan Mokhtar noted that orang asli children wasted their time after school hours, without indulging in any beneficial activity.

"When the hostel is ready, we want them to continue learning after school hours, especially on Fardu Ain and the Al-Quran, with the guidance of teachers imparting religious knowledge and other subjects taken at school.

"We want orang asli children in the village to be among the best examples, in as far as orang asli villages in the country are concerned," he told Bernama at the Sungai Pergam Orang Asli Community Mahabbah Programme here today.

The programme was organised by the Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (Perkim). Also present was Perkim state chairman Datuk Ismail Yahya.

Wan Abdul Hakim said he would try to obtain funds amounting to RM500,000, from the education ministry, Terengganu Islamic and Malay Customs Council or Orang Asli Department to develop the hostel.
