WINDHOEK, 26 JUN (NAMPA) - RDP Member of Parliament (MP) Heiko Lucks has called for the legal drinking age to be increased as most young people are still in school when they reach the current legal drinking age of 18.
He said this during the debate on the Report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Alcohol Abuse in Namibia in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
“Alcohol consumption by schoolgoers affects their performance,” Lucks stated.
He further noted that age also plays a big role in alcohol addiction.
The MP noted that people who start consuming alcohol at a young age stand a bigger chance of alcohol addiction.
Lucks further emphasised that the situation in Namibia is drastic, and therefore calls for drastic action to ensure that the abuse of alcohol is reduced in young people.
