SUNGAI BULOH, July 6 (Bernama) -- Youths have been encouraged to join the Area Farmers' Association (PPK) to ensure the agriculture sector continues to be a main contributor for economic growth in the state and country.
Deputy Agriculture and Agrobased Industry Minister Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said their participation would also help the PPK prepare future leaders and reject the perception that the agriculture sector was synonymous with the older age group.
"To ensure the agrobased industry experiences economic transformation, we need to encourage more youths to join the PPK.
"I hope they don't look at agriculture cynically as many have made it and proved themselves to become successful entrepreneurs," he said at the officiation of the 32nd Gombak and Petaling PPK annual general meeting here today.
He said the field of agriculture and agrobased industry was now on par with entrepreneurship, which could promise them success with hard work.
During the same ceremony, Farmer's Organisation Authority chairman Datuk Zainal Dahalan said only 15 per cent of the 800,000 farmers nationwide were currently aged below 40.
