TAIPING, July 6 (Bernama) -- The Tourism and Culture Ministry plans to make Taiping, which is rich in tourism products, a historical city.

Its minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said today the ministry would hold discussions with the state government to preserve the tourism treasures of Taiping, which is now known as a heritage town.

"There are many historical buildings and attractions in Taiping such as the old railway station, Maxwell Hill and Kuala Sepetang. I am worried if some of the historical buildings are demolished to make way for development projects as Taiping will lose its tourism treasures."

Mohamed Nazri said this after visiting the Taiping Museum, here, in conjunction with the 'Museum and Community' programme and also part of his two-day visit to Perak since helming the ministry.

He said the Taiping Museum, another historical building, would be upgraded as the town's tourism icon and to also attract more domestic and foreign tourists to the museum.

"I am impressed with the artefacts at this museum....schoolchildren must be taken here to see that such things exist in the state like the traditional games, traditional food and so on," he added.

Today's programme at the museum included wayang kulit, dikir barat and school band performances and also featured 47 exhibition booths promoting tourism, health products and handicrafts.
