WINDHOEK, 19 JUN (NAMPA) Congress of Democrats (CoD) president Ben Ulenga says he is willing to stand as president of the party again, but only if the party's members insist that he does so.
Ulenga, who has been president of the CoD since 1999, made the statement at a media conference in Windhoek on Thursday, where he announced that the partys anticipated congress will take place at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region on 05 and 06 July.
The congress was supposed to have taken place from 27 to 29 June, but because of the funeral of the late OvaHerero Paramount Chief Kuaima Riruako, the party decided to shift it to a week later, he explained.
Riruako will be laid to rest at Okahandja on 29 June.
Asked by members of the media whether he will avail himself for re-election as the partys president, Ulenga responded that nobody in the party has nominated him yet, adding that it is members of the party that have the prerogative to do so and not himself.
As he has been at the helm of the party for 15 years now, Ulenga said if the party decided to elect a new president, he would be happy with the decision.
However if there is an insistence that I stand as president of the party, I will also be equally willing. I understand that there are candidates for that position and others, and I welcome that warmly. It is a good thing if young people who have been in the party for a while want to take over leadership of the party, he added.
Meanwhile, Ulenga said the congress at Ongwediva will review the partys progress over the last five years and discuss the upcoming national elections.
Between 300 and 350 delegates from all 14 regions of the country are expected to attend the congress, which will also elect a new party leadership.
Besides having attendance by the partys women wing and the youth wing, we hope to also have a number of local friendly parties, mainly those that we feel are ideologically related to the CoD, he stated.
The CoD president also informed the conference that his party is going to take part fully in the upcoming elections before stating that if there is however any agreement between several parties to take part as a group either in the local authority elections or the national elections, the CoD will consider such cooperation.
