WINDHOEK, 17 JUN (NAMPA) The Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) Namibia Premier League (NPL) is still struggling to crown the 2013/14 league champions due to an incomplete match between African Stars Football Club (FC) and Orlando Pirates FC.
Stars, who are currently second on the NPL log with 45 points after beating Blue Boys 3-0 on Saturday, still have a an eight-minute match to play against Orlando Pirates.
A match between Stars and Pirates was abandoned when the floodlights at the Sam Nujoma Stadium went out due to a power failure in the area in March this year.
At the time, there were only eight minutes of play left on the clock, and Pirates were leading by 2-0.
A court appeal availed to Nampa on Tuesday said Stars intends to hand in an application to the High Court on 19 June 2014 at 09h00 to stop the crowning of the league champions, and for a re-match with Orlando Pirates.
At a media briefing last Thursday, Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) and the NPL announced that the league champions were supposed to be crowned on Saturday, but that could not happen due to the outstanding game between the two teams.
Speaking to Nampa on Tuesday, NPL league administrator Tovey //Hoebeb said the league will inform the media about the rematch between the two teams and the same applies to the crowning of the league champions.
We are at the moment very busy consulting with our stakeholders, and we will inform you at a later stage, said //Hoebeb.
Pirates team manager Agab Gowaseb on Tuesday also told this agency that he is in the dark with regards to the re-match of the game between his team and Stars, as he has not received a lot of communication from the NPL.
All I know at the moment is football stopped on 14 June 2014, and the rest of the information with regards to our game with Stars Im just reading it in the papers just like most people, said Gowaseb.
He added that he is not sure what they will do if they are told to replay the match as all players are currently on leave.
Most of our players left for the holidays and we dont know if we should recall the players for the re-match if we will be told to replay the game, but all that will be decided when the decision is made by the league, he stated.
Stars unsuccessfully launched an appeal to have the entire match replayed before the last games of the league were played. The NPL has not yet announced the date when the eight minutes will be played.
If Stars draw two-all with Pirates in the remaining eight minutes; they will be crowned 2013/14 league champions because of a better goal difference than defending champions Black Africa (BA).
BA drew one-all with Tura Magic on Saturday, and now has 46 points on the log, while Stars are standing on 45 points.
