DATUK KERAMAT ASSEMBLYMAN TO MONITOR PENANG STATE ASSEMBLY AFFAIRS

GEORGE TOWN, July 5 (Bernama) -- State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo has been tasked with ensuring the Penang state assembly session is conducted smoothly without a hitch.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced this during the winding up speech on the Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas's address at the state assembly here today.

He said this was to ensure that the cancellation of the question-and-answer session today would not recur.

"The State Assembly secretary and the state secretary were informed that as the speaker has yet to be appointed, the oral question session could be held. The advice was accepted by the state government from the state legal adviser without question.

"As an executive body, the state government did not double check the rationale of the advice because we assume the assembly's internal affairs should be separated from that of the executive," he said.

Lim said Jagdeep, who is also the Datuk Keramat assemblyman, would scrutinise each recommendation or advice to ensure that the parliamentary democracy process functioned effectively and to discus with opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid with guidance of the speaker.

He also admitted that the decision to skip the Q and A session was a mistake that should not have happened and he apologised for the error.

The first day of the sitting on Wednesday was marred by outbursts from Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen when speaker Law Choo Kiang did not allow any questions from the House and proceeded with debate on the Yang Dipertua Negeri's address.
