RAMADAN CAN RELIEVE THE HEAT OF CAMPAIGNING - AHMAD MASLAN

JOHOR BAHARU, July 5 (Bernama) -- The holiness of the fasting month of Ramadan is expected to relieve the heat of campaigning in the Kuala Besut state by-election on July 24, said information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

He said the Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) election machinery would use an appropriate campaign programme to honour Ramadan.

"So, we hope the opposition would do likewise by avoiding spreading lies and slanders during the campaign.

"This is not the first time a by-election is held during the fasting month and we are ready for it," he told reporters after opening the fourth branch of a cake and donut shop, House of Mini in Puteri Harbour, Nusajaya, here today.

Ahmad, who is also deputy finance minister, said Umno would organise more tazkirah (religious talks) and house to house visit and reduce programmes that involve too many people.

The Kuala Besut state seat fell vacant following the death of assemblyman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar of the Barisan Nasional due to lung cancer on June 26.
