PUTRAJAYA, July 5 (Bernama) - The Ministry of Health today advised members of the public against buying or consuming the unregistered Malay traditional medicine, 'Maajun Kuat Khasiat Sakit Pinggang', which is suspected of containing dexamethasone.
The Senior Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Ministry of Health, Datuk Eisah Abdul Rahman, said tests carried out by the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau (BPFK) found that the product contained dexamethasone, a strong type of inflammatory function of corticosteroids and usually used in the treatment of allergy and prohibited from being used as an ingredient in traditional medicines.
She said the prolonged use of dexamethasone without supervision by medical professionals could result in serious side effects that could endanger the user's health such as a weakening of the muscles, brittle bones, a rise in blood sugar level, high blood pressure and glaucoma.
"Patients can also suffer from the ‘cushing syndrome’ with symptoms such as round face and the upper part of the body growing bigger but the arms and legs appearing smaller. Other adverse effects include weakening muscles and the Stevens-Johnson Syndrome," she said in a statement, here today.
