WALVIS BAY, 03 JUN (NAMPA) – Teams from Otjiwarongo’s ‘4 Artillery Brigade’ of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) in Otjiwarongo dominated the force’s annual sports tournament at Walvis Bay at the weekend.
The NDF Foundation Annual Sport Tournament, which ended on Monday, took place at the Kuisebmund and Jan Welkom stadiums here.
Otjiwarongo’s ‘4 Artillery Brigade’ soccer team walked away with a floating trophy and gold medals, after defeating the Military Police team 5-1 goals in the final game.
The third place in the soccer category was occupied by the Military School team, which received bronze medals.
In other categories, ‘4 Artillery Brigade’ teams also won second places in volley ball and netball competitions, claiming the silver medals.
The second-best performing team at the tournament was the Navy Force, which won first place in volley ball and third place in netball.
They won a trophy for being the overall winners in volley ball and received bronze medals for occupying the third place in netball.
The ‘26 Brigade’ from Grootfontein took the first place in netball and third place in volley ball, making them the third best overall team.
The Pool table category was won by the ‘12 Brigade’ from Windhoek, followed by the ‘Special Force’ in second place and the ‘Air Force’ in third place.
There were no cash prizes for the winners, only medals.
Presenting the awards, NDF Chief Major-General John Mutwa encouraged members of the defence force to keep fit, as it is necessary for their health and their profession.
“You must make sure you exercise regularly not only during formal exercises. Let us avoid going to shebeens and drinking alcohol,” he said.
Teams from Lüderitz, Walvis Bay, Windhoek, Otjiwarongo, Grootfontein and Keetmanshoop participated in this year’s annual tournament.
