WINDHOEK, 30 MAY (NAMPA) - The 14th edition of the Old Mutual Victory Race Series was officially launched here Wednesday.
Speaking at the launch, Old Mutual's Chief Executive Officer Gim Victor said their commitment of over N.dollars 4, 2 million towards the annual race has not only made it possible for thousands of Namibians to enjoy the sheer exhilaration of running, but has also made it possible for Namibian athletes to compete outside the country on the basis of Old Mutual's sponsorship.
He said the organisers of the race have now also introduced a five-kilometre paralympic fun walk for athletes with disabilities.
For the race, these athletes will be divided into different age categories, he said.
Victor said as early as 2001, Old Mutual wanted to capture the interest of Namibian runners and support them to reach even greater platforms where they can hold the name of Namibian high.
This year's race will once again accord athletes from all over the country an opportunity to show-off their exceptional running abilities in four major centres of the country.
On 14 June the race will be in Oshakati; it will be held in Swakopmund on 28 June; the runners will be in Keetmanshoop on 12 July; and the finals will take place in Windhoek on 26 July.
Also speaking at the launch, the Chief Sports Officer in the Minister of Youth, National Services, Sports and Culture Hendrik Mapele applauded Old Mutual Namibia for their contribution towards sports development in the country.
We all know that government alone with its limited funds cannot develop sports in the country. We need partners like Old Mutual Namibia to carry out this noble task for the betterment of our sportspeople, he said.
