GOBABIS, 23 MAY (NAMPA) – Gobabis mayor Silla Bezuidenhoudt recently laid a charge of physical assault against her husband.
Richard Bezuidenhoudt appeared in the Gobabis Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of assaulting his wife.
Gobabis Magistrate Victor Nyazo denied Richard bail, and postponed the case to 23 June 2014 for further investigations.
He was, however, advised to lodge an application for a formal bail hearing should he so wishes.
Information availed to Nampa by sources close to the couple has it that the couple are on the verge of divorce, following alleged differences.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Regional Commander for the Omaheke Region, Commissioner Josephat Abel urged those who are in abusive domestic relationships to break their silence and report acts of abuse to the police.
Abel noted that since most cases of domestic violence occur within the confines of the couple's homes, it is often difficult for the police to act against the perpetrators.
“We cannot police inside the bedroom. Therefore, we rely on information provided to us to act against those suspected of committing these heinous crimes.
We should also take note that no one is immune to domestic violence. Today it may be someone else, but tomorrow it could be you,” he said.
