NILAI, July 4 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) are prepared to to help bring back Malaysians in Egypt if the situation in the country worsens.

MAF chief General Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin said the need for this had not come yet and the decision to evacuate the Malaysians would be made by the government through the National Security Council and Foreign Ministry.

"The last Ops Pyramid was very difficult because we had to establish contacts with countries such as Saudi Arabia. But now we have the contacts, so if we need to evacuate Malaysians from Egypt, we may not have a problem.

"We are ready if there is a need to do so and I'm confident that the crisis facing Egypt will be resolved in a while and things will return to normal."

Zulkifeli said this after opening the Government Services Welfare and Recreation Council (Maksak) 45th Track and Field Championship at Tunku Najihah Sports Complex, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), here, today.

In another development, he said the MAF was also ready to provide humanitarian assistance in Acheh that was hit by an earthquake, if called upon to do so.
