WINDHOEK, 15 MAY (NAMPA) – The Swapo-Party Elders’ Council (SPEC) has elected Mukwaita Shanyengana as secretary of the council at an extra-ordinary congress held at Swakopmund early this month.
Shanyengana who served as SPEC’s Deputy Secretary before his election, made the announcement at a media conference here on Thursday.
The congress was necessitated by the vacancy which developed as a result of the death of national hero Frederick Matongo last year.
Shanyengana was the sole candidate for the position of secretary, and thus by virtue of the Swapo-Party rules and procedures of conducting elections of office bearers, he was proclaimed as duly elected SPEC Secretary.
He noted that to show that SPEC is the first Swapo organ to implement the 50/50 representation of men and women at all structures, the position of deputy secretary went to Mary Masule after Loide Shinavene also contested for it.
The congress had only one agenda item, which was to elect the secretary and deputy secretary.
Swapo President Hifikepunye Pohamba officially opened the congress, during which members promised that they as elders who are the custodians of knowledge, would write books about their lives and experiences in order to bequeath that to the current and future generations.
