WINDHOEK, 15 MAY (NAMPA) Fast food outlet Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) on Thursday launched the Football Beat Five-a-Side youth football competition in the capital.
The event is slated for Windhoek on 07 June at the United Nations (UN) Plaza in Katutura as a way of creating a fun-filled experience for children to make new friends, be entertained, and bring the KFC brand and community together.
The competition is open to school-going children - both boys and girls - between 10 and 14 years old only.
KFC brand manager for Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa (BLNS), Thabo Ntseoane said during the launch that Namibia will be the pioneer of the KFC Football Beat Five-a-Side event.
As a family restaurant brand, we are pleased to be creating events where children can have fun and make new friends while getting involved in fun activities. Football Beat will bring communities together and have youngsters playing the worlds most famous sport, while enjoying the worlds most famous chicken meal, he said.
To qualify for the competition, interested youngsters can from Monday onwards visit any KFC outlet in and around Windhoek, purchase any item on the menu, fill in an entry form, and stand a chance to qualify to participate in the final event by testing their skills on an X-Box Kinetic gaming console within the outlet.
Ntseoane added that after three weeks, 96 children will be selected based on the highest scores after a minute of playing on the X-Box Kinetic gaming consoles. These children will then be divided into 16 teams, which will compete amongst each other in actual football at the UN Plaza on 07 June.
The 16 teams will be coached by 16 coaches selected from the community and with the assistance of the Namibian Football Association, said Ntseoane.
Starting on Monday, we will visit different schools around Windhoek to create awareness among school children to come participate in our Football Beat Five-a-Side event, he said.
